Herman W. Friedman Obituary (1924 - 2015)

FRIEDMAN, HERMAN W. Age 91, formerly of Elmira, died peacefully on Sunday, November 15, 2015. He was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on January 31, 1924 and was the son of Samuel and Lena Friedman. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Penn State University. Upon graduating he was employed in the Sports Department of the Indiana Pennsylvania Star-Gazette. He also received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Bucknell University. Most of his career was spent in education. Mr. Friedman taught Social Studies at Waverly High School for eight years. He also taught English and Social Studies at the Mechanical Mining Institute, a college preparatory school in Freeland, Pennsylvania. He retired from Southside High School in Elmira, New York, where he had taught Social Studies for twenty-five years. Mr. Friedman also served in the Army for two years at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland in Public Relations. He was a member of Congregation Kol Ami in Elmira, New York, and of the New York State Union of Teachers. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Abbe Friedman of Bloomfield CT; Stephen and Susannah Friedman of Wallingford, PA; grandchildren, Scott Friedman, Michael Friedman, Zoe Friedman and Rebecca Friedman; brother, David Friedman of Farmington Hills, Michigan; sister-in-law, Viola Friedman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sylvia Friedman; and his brothers Irving Friedman, Albert Friedman, and Bernard Friedman.
